Security as a Software Quality Metric
Software vulnerabilities are simply bugs that have security consequences. Just as unit tests prevent logic regressions, secure coding practices prevent unauthorized data exfiltration.
In this guide, we review the top application vulnerabilities seen in enterprise audits and how to prevent them structurally.
1. Broken Object Level Authorization (BOLA / IDOR)
BOLA occurs when an application exposes internal database IDs directly in URLs without validating whether the requesting user owns that entity:
GET /api/documents/10842If an attacker increments the ID to `10843` and receives another organization's confidential contract, your system has an IDOR flaw.
**Remediation:** Always scope queries by the authenticated user's tenant ID or organization context in the database query itself:
const document = await db.documents.findFirst({
where: {
id: documentId,
organizationId: currentUser.organizationId, // Enforced constraint
},
});2. SQL & Query Injection
Never concatenate user strings into raw database queries. Modern ORMs and query builders use parameterized queries automatically, but developers often bypass them when writing complex reporting filters.
Always utilize parameterized statements so the SQL engine compiles the query structure independently of user data inputs.
