Secure SSH Jump Server IDS

Bastion Host with Automated Intrusion Detection & Firewall Isolation

Client / LabCybersecurity R&D Lab
CategoryCybersecurity Research
TimelineResearch & Development
StatusDelivered & Verified
Role & Contribution:

Threat modeling, Linux server hardening, IDS rule development, automated firewall blocking logic, attack simulation with Hydra, and Flask telemetry dashboard.

The Operational Challenge

Exposing SSH management ports to the public internet leaves servers vulnerable to relentless automated brute-force attacks and credential stuffing, while traditional static firewall rules fail to react dynamically.

The Architectural Solution

Engineered an automated defense pipeline: an SSH Jump Server that inspects authentication logs in real time, classifies attack patterns, invokes automated UFW rules to drop hostile IPs, and renders incident telemetry in a web dashboard.

Systems Architecture & Engineering

Dual-interface network architecture isolating internal infrastructure behind the bastion
Asynchronous log stream watcher parsing auth.log for failed password attempts and invalid users
Rule-based threshold engine triggering UFW automated deny rules upon breach detection
Flask telemetry service exposing real-time connection attempts, blocked IP lists, and incident timestamps

Key Capabilities Delivered

  • Automated real-time classification of anomalous connection frequency
  • Immediate programmatic firewall rule insertion without manual operator intervention
  • Centralized incident audit log documenting attack timestamps, source IPs, and attack vector
  • Web telemetry console displaying threat metrics, active sessions, and blocked subnets
Security Engineering Considerations
  • •Internal infrastructure remains completely unreachable except via authenticated jump host
  • •Self-defending firewall preventing resource starvation from Hydra brute-force floods
  • •Principle of least privilege enforced across bastion operator accounts

Measurable Results & Outcomes

Successfully detected and blocked 100% of Hydra-simulated brute force attacks in under 3 seconds

Zero false positives recorded during legitimate multi-user authentication tests

Published as a foundational engineering case study in defensive automation
